College professor Harry Hicks, ousted from his job and his family after a romantic mistake, flees to Paris where he is forced to take a job as a night watchman for a sinister operation, and he thinks life is looking up when he meets Margit, a cultivated, Hungarian émigré, until he notices all the people who have wronged him in the past are dying.

Jack, a neurotic American interior designer, vacationing in Europe with his girlfriend Marion, a French photographer, begins to regret ever leaving New York when the couple stops in Paris where meetings with her eccentric parents and friends, and countless encounters with her former lovers, have him wondering if their relationship can survive.
