    [synopsis] => George-Étienne Cartier est considéré comme un des pères de la Confédération canadienne.
Né en 1814 dans le village de Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu à l'est de Montréal, il est issu d'une famille de marchands installés au Canada depuis 1735. Il deviendra avocat, tout en s'intéressant aux affaires politiques. Il participera ainsi à la révolte des patriotes en 1837 et devra se réfugier quelque temps aux États-Unis avant de revenir à Montréal. En 1848, il est élu député à l'Assemblée législative du Canada-Uni, commençant ainsi sa carrière politique. Il deviendra ministre puis premier ministre et défendra la création d'une Confédération canadienne.
