"July 1945. While African American GIs wait for transport home, racial tensions run high at the army base in Hastings -- particularly when a black American serviceman becomes romantically involved with a white local woman. Then a series of nighttime holdups adds to the town's concerns and leaves Foyle puzzled" -- container.

March 1943. While investigating a gambling ring and incidents of sabotage, Foyle becomes distracted by a personal crisis. His troubled goddaughter, Lydia, shows up unexpectedly at his doorstep-along with her young son James, a boy so deeply traumatized by a bomb strike at his school that he refuses to speak.

Looking into the deaths of several high-ranking Russian defectors, Foyle finds ties to the apparent suicide of an unidentified Russian man and the disappearance of a young woman. His search leads him to a government listening station that may not be what it appears.

December 1942. The death of Grace Phillips, a young worker in a local munitions factory, arouses suspicions. The subsequent murder of Detective Paul Milner's estranged wife, Jane, seems to confirm that Grace's death was no accident. But the evidence points to Milner himself as Jane's murderer.

August 1945. Foyle probes the mysterious motives of James Devereaux, a former POW and member of the British Free Corps, who refuses to defend himself against treason charges. Meanwhile, Milner investigates the murder of a young woman rooming with the Devereaux family's housekeeper.

After an assassination attempt on Hilda Pierce, Foyle examines her Special Operations Executive activities during the war and rumors of a traitor.
