Anna Leonowens is an English school teacher who comes to teach the children of the King Mongut of Siam in the middle 1860s.

In the turn-of-the century Oklahoma Territory on the brinkof statehood, the story unfolds in peaceful Claremore. Laurey and Curley fuss and fight and will not admit that they love each other. Ado Annie cannot decide between Will, a handsomerodeo rider, and Ali Hakim, a smooth, citified travelling peddler. Curley and Jud Fry, the rough-edged hired hand, struggle over Laurey's affections. All will be settled at the Skidmore social.

Set in the Pacific theater during World War II, this musical film explores the theme of racial prejudice in two parallel stories; that of a Navy nurse's love for a plantation owner with two Eurasian children, and a Marine lieutenant's love for a native woman.
